Interior Design & Furniture Competition: Re-enchanting The Villa Medici

An open international competition has opened for the interior design and the creation of a furniture line for the historic Fellows Pavilions at Villa Medici, the home of the French Academy in Rome since 1803.

The calls for proposals are part of the Re-enchanting Villa Medici project, sponsored by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation and partnership with Manufactures nationales – Sèvres & Mobilier national. The calls are open to French as well as international architects and interior designers, with no age or nationality restrictions. The deadline for proposals is December 1, 2025.

In the 1950s, architect Jacques Carlu in the 1950s designed nine pavilions on the grounds of Villa Medici. The first competition calls for proposals for the interior design of these pavilions, which host fellows in residency at Villa Medici. Work would be scheduled to begin in 2026. Candidates are asked to propose projects that involve the significant contribution of craft professionals. 

The second competition calls for the creation of a furniture line for these pavilions. The call aims to select a proposal for a fully or partially modular and adaptable furniture line, which will be prototyped by the Manufactures nationaux and produced for installation in the pavilions.

The call for applications for the Villa Medici residency program dedicated to the arts and crafts is also open, and aims to select six professional artisans to undertake a one-month residency in Rome in 2026. This call is open to arts and crafts professionals from all disciplines and practices.
