Remembering A President With Architectural Dignity, Modesty, And Integrity

0

The current public outrage – which I share – over Trump’s demolition of the East Wing of the White House to build a disgusting massive billionaire’s ballroom, reminded me that we once had grace and dignity in the White House.

So let’s take an intimate and detailed look – inside and out – at FDR’s modest Little White House in Warm Springs, Georgia. I had the great pleasure of touring that special place.

As these photos show, architecture can not be divorced from politics, vision, values and public policies.

The modesty of FDR’s Little White House reflects the democratic values of his New Deal policies. The landscape and architecture are human scale and integrated with the natural environment. The kitchen and bathroom are not that much different than those of my poor grandmother (except for the lack of a washer board) who suffered through the depression and benefited from FDR’s New Deal policies (my mom was born in 1929). Even the workers’ housing was dignified.

In strong contrast, Trump’s garish outrage reflects the detached sociopathic arrogance of a King and his oligarchical cronies, and perfectly symbolizes the greed and cruelty of Trump’s deranged vision and policy agenda.

How far we have fallen.
