I feel confident about my role in the Australian team: Adam Zampa
Australia legspinner Adam Zampa has gained confidence from the recently concluded limited-overs tour of India.
Australia legspinner Adam Zampa has gained confidence from the recently concluded limited-overs tour of India where he was the second highest-wicket taker across a five-match ODI series, playing a starring role in a historic win.
Zampa has had a reversal of fortunes since his previous tour of India in 2017 where he managed four wickets in three matches apart from being quite expensive.
With his stocks rising, the 26-year-old has become a top contender to be included in Australia’s World Cup squad as the lead spinner. With the spinners making an impact across the world, especially in limited-overs cricket, it will be hard for the defending champions to not take a specialist spinner to England this time around.
But Zampa isn’t taking anything for granted knowing fully well how quickly stocks can rise and fall in international cricket.
“Throughout my short career I’ve found it can change really quickly,” Zampa said on Tuesday. “I started my career really well, but I’ve had some ups and downs. So (I’m) trying to build on the momentum I have would be great – I know what it’s like to be in and out of the team and be dropped from the squad altogether.”
Zampa, who has 53 wickets in 39 ODIs, is currently in UAE with the Australia squad that will face Pakistan in a five-match series from Saturday. “(I’m) just trying to make the most of my position at the moment … I guess taking it one series at a time – it’s a bit of a cliché, but that’s how it is,” he said.
Zampa, however, has gotten a clarity of his role in the current Australia ODI setup. “I’m obviously happy with how they came out in the Indian series. It’s nice to try and make an impact, especially through the middle overs. After that series I feel really confident about my role in the team.
Her added, “I feel as though the first couple of games I wasn’t at my best, but to get the wickets on the board built my confidence up a little bit. So I feel like – particularly the last game, it was probably the best I bowled. I’m feeling confident at the moment.”
