Ben Stokes is a national hero and nobody in England can deny that after the allrounder’s incredible unbeaten century saw the hosts to a thrilling one-wicket win in the third Ashes 2019 Test at Headingley.
Calls for Stokes, who scored an astonishing 135* that saw England complete their highest successful fourth innings chase, to be knighted are growing louder by the day.
Even the gay couple defended by Stokes during the Bristol brawl have called for him to be knighted.
According to a report in The Sun on Tuesday, Kai Barry and William O’Connor said the Queen should reward the England player for dishing out one of the top Ashes innings at Headingley. “There’s no question he should get a knighthood. He saved us, now he’s saved the Ashes,” Kai said.
“Ben risked his career for us. He’s my hero. He’s showed immense strength of character.”

The couple were defended by Stokes after a row in Bristol which saw the 28-year-old hauled before the court. He was later cleared of affray.
Stokes credited his wife Clare for his phenomenal feat. “Clare has been brilliant and so supportive throughout the years. Your family go through everything with you, good and bad, so it is great to be able to celebrate with them at times like this.”
“I didn’t actually see Clare until late in the evening when we got back from the ground. I still had my training gear on and my England cap.
“First thing she spotted was the bag in my hand. She said, ‘Oh, so we’ve been to McDonald’s have we?’.”

He admitted that he can’t wait to get back home to spend time with his wife and kids. “I love playing cricket, but you need to be able to get away from the game and that is where your home and your family keep you grounded,” he said.
