Along with ace batsman Virat Kohli, Team India released a 16-member squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan on Sunday, January 7. Captain Rohit Sharma also returned to the shortest format. The pair hasn’t been in a series in the over the last 14 months, having last played in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal matchup against England.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya had been given the responsibility of captaining the team in Rohit’s absence, and there were a lot of speculations suggesting that he will also lead the team in the T20 World Cup. Nevertheless, the team management chose to call back Rohit due to an injury sustained at the last minute by both him and Suryakumar Yadav, the team’s captain for the previous two series.
Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, backed Rohit to captain the team in the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
“Of course Rohit should captain the team in the T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player, nothing will happen (even if they are coming back to T20 fold after a long gap),” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Notably, with 4008 and 3853 runs respectively, Kohli and Rohit are the two highest run scorers in T20I history. In T20 World Cups, Kohli is a different beast as he leads the competition in run scoring with 1141 runs from 25 innings at an average of 81.50, including 14 half-centuries.
In the meantime, Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali will host the start of the three-match Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan on Thursday, January 11. Conversely, the West Indies and the United States will host the T20 World Cup 2024 starting on June 1.
