Soon after suffering a humiliating 9-wicket loss to Puducherry in their home opener for the Ranji Trophy 2024 season, Delhi removed skipper Yash Dhull. Delhi’s decision to fire their youthful captain is another example of the once-dominant domestic teams making dubious selection decisions in the recent past.
On Monday, January 8, Delhi lost an Elite Group D encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to the underdog Puducherry, who crushed them by 9 wickets. In seamer-friendly conditions in the capital, Captain Dhull, who captained India in the U19 World Cup in 2022, found it difficult to get going against the Puducherry fast bowlers. He scored 2 and 23 in the first two innings as Delhi was unable to go past 150 even once during the first-class game.
Joint secretary of the Delhi District Cricket Association Rajan Manchanda stated that the state organisation decided to remove Yash Dhull from leadership in an effort to assist the young batter in getting back into form.
Himmat Singh appointed as the new captain for Delhi
“Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side,” Manchanda said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Yash Dhull, a 21-year-old who was picked to be captain in 2022 which was considered to be a bold decision by the association, has participated in 17 first-class matches for Delhi and amassed 1185 runs at an average of 43.88. He’s reached four hundreds, including an unbeaten 200 .
But recently, Yash Dhull has been having trouble with his form. In seven matches, the Delhi player failed to score fifty runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Earlier in the season, Yash Dhull was leading Delhi in both the domestic 50-over and 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournaments.
