The senior men’s selection committee of the BCCI, led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet soon to finalize the Indian squad for the remaining three Tests against England. Captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid are expected to be present at the meeting. Notably, Rohit had a detailed discussion with Agarkar after India’s victory in the second Test in Visakhapatnam.
The selection process is expected to be complex, with several key decisions to be made. One of the major concerns is the availability of Virat Kohli. Kohli, who missed the first two Tests and is unlikely to play in the third and fourth Tests, might also be doubtful for the final Test in Dharamsala. Although Kohli has informed Rohit and the selectors about his decision, the selectors may wait for his final decision before announcing the squad for the last Test.
Another significant absentee from the series might be Mohammed Shami, who is yet to recover from an ankle injury sustained during the ODI World Cup.
However, there is positive news regarding KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. Both players, who missed the second Test due to injuries, are likely to be included in the squad for the next two Tests. Rahul is recovering from a quadriceps injury, while Jadeja hurt his hamstring during the series opener. Both are undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, and the selectors are optimistic about their return.
Pacer Mohammed Siraj, who was released from the squad for the second Test, is set to return to share the workload with Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming Tests. While there were speculations about Bumrah being rested for the third Test, he is expected to play in Rajkot. However, if India win the third Test, Bumrah might be rested for the fourth Test in Ranchi due to the tight schedule.
The ongoing five-match series is currently tied at 1-1, making the third Test crucial for both teams. A victory in the third Test would provide a significant advantage to the winning team.
