England faced a daunting challenge as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan dominated, setting a formidable 557-run target. Jaiswal achieved his second Test double century, while Sarfaraz secured another fifty as India declared their second innings at 430/4. However, moments before the declaration, a humorous incident involving Rohit Sharma caused considerable confusion, leaving Sarfaraz, Jaiswal, and England bewildered.
At the end of the 97th over, with India poised to conclude their second innings, Rohit Sharma donned his whites and prepared to take the field. As the players took a drinks break, Jaiswal and Sarfaraz, having satisfied their thirst and noticing their captain’s readiness, began heading towards the dressing room. This action led Ben Stokes and his team to believe that the innings had ended, prompting England to prepare to leave the field as well.

However, there was a surprising twist: It wasn’t the moment for England to take a break just yet. Rohit promptly signaled for Sarfaraz and Jaiswal to return and continue playing, as the captain still needed to put on his spikes. With the play resumed, Sarfaraz faced Rehan Ahmed’s delivery.
India’s innings continued for just one more over, as Sarfaraz unleashed a barrage of boundaries against the leg-spinner, scoring 6, 4, 6, 0, and 1. Rohit then decided it was time for the declaration, with India holding a commanding 556-run lead, largely credited to Jaiswal’s remarkable double century and half-centuries from Sarfaraz and Shubman Gill. However, England’s relief was short-lived, as their chase got off to a disastrous start with four wickets falling within 12 overs.
Ben Duckett, who troubled India in the first innings, was the first to depart, running himself out due to a superb piece of fielding by Dhruv Jurel. Zak Crawley followed, falling LBW to Jasprit Bumrah for the fourth time in the series. With spin introduced early, Ravindra Jadeja struck twice in rapid succession, with Rohit Sharma taking a sharp catch at slip to dismiss Ollie Pope, followed by Johnny Bairstow being trapped LBW. These quick wickets saw England collapse to 28/4.
It was a day filled with numerous achievements for India. Jaiswal’s remarkable innings cemented his status in Indian cricket history. He joined an elite group, including Vinoo Mankad and Virat Kohli, as only the third Indian batsman to score multiple double centuries in a Test series, with his feat coming in consecutive matches, second only to Kohli. This marked India’s third instance of scoring 400 or more runs in both innings of a Test match. Additionally, India set a new record for the most sixes hit in a Test series, totaling 48, and in a single match, reaching an impressive 21 sixes.
