Former India head coach and international player Ravi Shastri heaped admiration on young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal following his outstanding performance against England in the third Test in Rajkot. Jaiswal, who failed with a run-a-ball ten in India’s first innings, scored well in his next opportunity. He created a stunning 104-run knock before an injury forced him to retire injured in the middle. On Saturday, as Jaiswal raced to his third Test century, Shastri compared his abilities to those of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Notably, Jaiswal returned to bat on Sunday and finished with 214 not out as India declared their second innings at 430 for 4, setting England a 557-run mark.
“Impressed with the way (Yashasvi) Jaiswal has stepped up today. Not just with the bat, but his performance on the field too. I think going forward, he could be one of Rohit’s go-to part-time options. The ball would be in his hands – whether it’s leg-spin, off-spin or medium-pace. Jaiswal reminds me of a young Tendulkar. Busy all the time,” said Shastri during commentary after Jaiswal completed his ton as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“This is a classic example of the saying ‘If you believe in yourself, there is hope’. Nothing is impossible. That’s just a word. He will be constantly involved,” he added.
India defeated England by 434 runs in the third Test, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series in Rajkot on Sunday. This was India’s largest Test win in terms of runs, surpassing their 372-run victory against New Zealand in 2021.
On day four, England crumbled to 122 all out in 39.4 overs, having set an implausible winning target of 557. Ravindra Jadeja was India’s most effective bowler, capturing five wickets for 41 runs in 12.4 overs. It was undoubtedly England’s poorest batting performance of the series, with no batter reaching 20 runs save number 10 Mark Wood (33). On the same pitch, India scored 445 and 430 for four declared in their two innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who finished undefeated on 214 in India’s second innings, laid the groundwork for the big victory. The game’s other centurions were Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. Sarfaraz Khan got back-to-back fifties on debut.
The fourth Test will be held in Ranchi beginning February 23.
