Shoaib Bashir, an off-spinner from England etched his name in cricketing annals as the second youngest bowler to clinch a five-for in Tests for the Three Lions, following a stellar performance on the third day of the fourth Test against India at the JSCA International Stadium Complex. At a mere 20 years and 135 days old, Bashir showcased his prowess by claiming five prized wickets, including those of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Ravindra Jadeja, and tail-ender Akash Deep. Across a marathon spell spanning 44 overs, he conceded 119 runs while delivering eight maiden overs, leaving an indelible mark on the match.
Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed achieved a similar feat by securing his maiden five-wicket haul at the youthful age of 18 years and 128 days. This remarkable accomplishment occurred during the 2022 series against Pakistan in Karachi. Hailing from Pakistan himself, the talented spinner displayed exceptional skill as he claimed his five wickets, conceding only 48 runs in the process.
As Day 3 drew close to end, India positioned themselves favorably at 40/0 in pursuit of 152 runs needed to clinch the five-match series. Skipper Rohit Sharma, holding steady on 24*, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, unbeaten on 16*, stood firm at the crease as play concluded for the day.
Meanwhile, in their second innings, England’s batting lineup crumbled, managing a mere 145 runs before being dismissed. While Zak Crawley led the resistance with a determined 60 off 91 balls, comprising seven fours, Jonny Bairstow chipped in with 30 runs from 42 deliveries, featuring three boundaries, before falling victim to the Indian bowling attack.
