Nathan Lyon led Australia to a 172-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test on Sunday, claiming six wickets as the hosts were reduced to 196 all out. The host team fell on the fourth morning in Wellington, losing their last seven wickets for 70 runs, four of which went to off-spinner Lyon.
Lyon took advantage of spin-friendly Basin Reserve conditions and New Zealand’s poor batting, which began the day on 111-3 and required 258 more runs to win an unexpected triumph.
The surrender came in the seventh over of the day, when Lyon bowled Rachin Ravindra for 59.

Ravindra had only added three to his overnight tally when he missed to keep a cut shot down and was grabbed by Cameron Green at point.

Travis Head caught Tom Blundell in a snug without scoring in the same over, and Lyon trapped Glenn Phillips in a leg before for one shortly after, exposing the tail.
Scott Kuggeleijn hammered 26 off 28 balls before struggling with a short ball from Green and was caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey, while Matt Henry perished for 14, caught at slip by Steve Smith from Josh Hazlewood.
Tim Southee became Lyon’s sixth victim before Daryl Mitchell fell for 38, he was caught and bowled by Josh Hazelwood.
Cameron Green named as the ‘Player of the Match’
Cameron Green earned the title of man of the match for his outstanding unbeaten 174 in the first innings. In a Test match that proved challenging for batsmen, no other player managed to reach the three-figure mark. Green played a pivotal role in Australia’s innings, rescuing them from a precarious position of 89-4 after being put into bat. His remarkable performance propelled Australia to a total of 383, establishing a substantial 204-run lead in the first innings.
