T Dilip, revived the tradition of awarding fielding medals, which made its debut during the 2023 World Cup. The special awards were presented in the Indian dressing room after every match, highlighting the importance of fielding in cricket.
This time, the announcement of the fielding medal winners came after the conclusion of the arduous Test series against England. BCCI secretary Jay Shah was present in the dressing room for the new post-game tradition in Dharamsala, where he had the honor of awarding the medals.
Adding a new dimension to the tradition, Dilip introduced two separate medals to be given out. He emphasized the significance of both exceptional catches and relentless efforts on the field in Test cricket.
During the ceremony, Dilip commended the collective efforts that illuminated the series, singling out Shreyas Iyer for his remarkable run-out of England captain Ben Stokes in the second Test. The run-out proved pivotal in India’s comeback after a defeat in the series opener.
Despite Iyer’s absence from the team later in the series, his contributions were duly acknowledged. Dilip also recognized the fielding prowess of Kuldeep Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill.
In a first-time occurrence, the Fielding Impact medal was shared between Gill and Rohit, reflecting their outstanding contributions throughout the series. Kuldeep was honored with the Relentless award for his tireless efforts on the field.
Dilip highlighted the importance of recognizing players who may not always be in the limelight but contribute significantly to the team’s success.
In the final Test of the series, Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his prowess by picking up a record five-wicket haul in his 100th Test appearance for India. Kuldeep’s contributions further bolstered India’s dominance as they secured a comprehensive victory by an innings and 64 runs, sealing the series 4-1.
The tradition of awarding fielding medals not only acknowledges individual excellence but also serves as a reminder of the integral role that fielding plays in cricket.
