Rohit Sharma will undoubtedly lead India’s drive in the T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the United States and the West Indies in June. The same cannot be said for Virat Kohli’s status in the team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already confirmed Rohit as India’s captain for the T20 World Cup, but when asked about Kohli, he stated the previous captain’s position in T20Is will be decided later.
As of present, the selectors are uncertain regarding Virat Kohli’s status in T20Is. Following India’s loss in the the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, both Rohit and Kohli opted to take a hiatus from the shortest format. Hardik Pandya was appointed captain of the T20I team, but after the all-rounder was ruled out of the ODI World Cup due to an ankle injury, there was a shift in strategy.
The BCCI administrators and selectors approached Rohit and Kohli to see whether they were interested in playing T20Is, and both veterans responded positively. During the home series against Afghanistan, Rohit and Kohli made their T20I comeback after a 15-month absence.
With young players pushing their cases and the format shifting so quickly, the selectors were doubtful of Kohli’s spot. If the newest article from The Telegraph is to be true then the uncertainty has only grown stronger.
According to the report, Kohli “hasn’t been able to cope with the team’s needs in the shortest format.” He will only be considered if he has a “superlative IPL” for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
According to sources, the national selectors and team management are prepared to make some difficult decisions with the T20 World Cup in mind.
The final decision may lie with head selector Ajit Agarkar, since BCCI senior officials do not want to get engaged in this.
“It remains a very delicate matter and not many are willing to get involved,” the source said.
