Father of 13-year-old arrested after child seriously injured in accident

The father and owner of the vehicle driven by a 13-year-old who was seriously injured in an accident in Athienou has been arrested and is set to appear before Larnaca district court later in the day, police said on Monday.

“The police are investigating the suspect for offenses related to unsafe custody, allowing his vehicle to be driven by a person without a license and without insurance,” police said.

According to the police, the 40-year-old was arrested under a court warrant to assist with police investigations into how the 13-year-old came to be driving the vehicle.

He has since been charged in writing.

The 13-year-old boy was seriously injured on Sunday when the car he was driving on a rural road in Athienou veered off course and overturned in a nearby field.

The accident happened under circumstances being investigated by the police at about 10.30am.

He was taken to Larnaca general hospital and was later transferred to Makarios children’s hospital in Nicosia for further treatment.

Police on Monday said the boy was in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
