Kings fall to Todd McLellan-coached Red Wings

DETROIT — The Kings failed to get the better of their former coach on Monday night.

Marco Kasper had two goals and an assist and the host Detroit Red Wings won their third straight by defeating the Kings, 5-2, giving Coach Todd McLellan a victory over the team that fired him not quite a year ago.

Lucas Raymond had a goal and three assists, Elmer Soderblom scored his first goal of the season and Alex DeBrincat also scored for Detroit, while Cam Talbot made 23 saves to improve to 8-1 in January.

Kevin Fiala and Quinton Byfield scored for the Kings, and Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves. The Kings, two games into a five-game road trip, have followed a five-game winning streak by going 2-5-1 over their last eight games.

Seconds after Talbot made a quality save against Adrian Kempe, Kasper gave the Red Wings a 4-2 lead with 9:55 left by knocking in his own rebound while getting shoved to the ice. He added an empty-netter in the final seconds.

The Kings scored the first two goals of the game and still had a 2-1 lead after one period.

Fiala found the back of the net with 5:10 left in the opening period. He took a shot from near the blue line, which beat a screened Talbot on the glove side. Jordan Spence and Alex Laferriere had the assists.

Then the Kings caught a big break. Dylan Larkin won a faceoff in his zone against Byfield. Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider took a backhanded swipe at the puck and inadvertently tapped it between Talbot’s skate and the goalpost. The “own goal” was credited to Byfield.

Detroit cut the Kings’ lead in half with some fine stick work. Kasper fought for his own rebound and made a backhanded pass through Trevor Moore’s legs to Raymond, who scored from the left side with 2:20 remaining in the period. Larkin had the second assist.

Raymond, Detroit’s leading scorer with 56 points, has 23 points in 16 games since McLellan was named head coach late last month.

The Red Wings took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation to tie the score at 6:03 of the second period. With Alex Turcotte and Byfield in the penalty box, DeBrincat scored on a one-timer from the left circle off a Raymond feed.

Soderblom gave Detroit the lead with 3:07 left in the period. He banged in a rebound of Christian Fischer’s shot. Albert Johansson also had an assist.

Detroit forwards Patrick Kane and J.T. Compher missed the game due to upper-body injuries and Vladimir Tarasenko sat out with an illness. With those three out, 31-year-old Dominik Shine made his NHL debut. Shine, who had appeared in 462 AHL games with Grand Rapids, skated on the fourth line.
