As sugar is a state subject, mills have to follow state government policies when it comes to buying sugarcane from farmers. This brings politics into the picture, something that had messed up the whole industry. But, in the past few years, the Union government has played a role in pulling the sector out of this mess. Today, from being agro-companies, they are also a part of the clean energy ecosystem. This is thanks to ethanol blending in petrol actually happening, and not just happening on paper, as used to be the case before 2014. Will this budget do something to further push them to become a more important part of the clean energy ecosystem?
