France24.com (en)

Dupont will lead the French club's charge to a record 23rd league title and a domestic and Champions Cup double almost a month to the day before a possible gold medal decider at the men's rugby sevens event of the Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old former World Rugby player of the year started off the season with defeat in the World Cup quarter-final at the Stade de France. Since that agonising loss, Dupont has successfully turned his hand to the shorter code of the game. He was named World Rugby... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

AFP Sport looks at five players aged 21 and under who have shone during the group stage. Nico Williams (Spain) Spain's group-stage performances have rocketed the three-time winners to hot favourites to win the tournament -- and nobody has impressed more than 21-year-old Nico Williams. Williams turns 22 on July 12, just two days before the Euro 2024 final in Berlin. Fresh from helping boyhood side Athletic Bilbao to the Copa del Rey trophy, their first silverware for 40 years, Williams has shown... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Since the 2015 Paris Agreement, 230 "climate-aligned" lawsuits have been launched against corporations and trade associations -- more than two-thirds of which were filed since 2020, said the report by the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics. "Cases against companies have traditionally been focused on the fossil fuel sector but they are now being launched across other sectors, including airlines, the food and beverage industry, e-commerce and financial services," the report said. Australia swim queen Campbell retires after missing out on Paris

France24.com (en)

The 32-year-old, regarded as one of the best relay swimmers the sport has known, missed out on a Paris berth in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the Australian trials this month. "I gave the pursuit of a fifth Olympics everything I had, and therefore, even in failure, there is a small, indelible kernel of pride," she said in a statement late Wednesday. "It's been a long and wild ride and I wouldn't change it for the world. "I can't wait to cheer on the Australian Dolphins and the rest of the Australian... Читать дальше...

From undocumented to business owner: a Honduran's American dream come true

France24.com (en)

Romero's soccer academy, with its hundreds of hopeful kids, might have been unimaginable for the Honduran second flight player, who had been in New York working construction full time while moonlighting as a coach. One of the toughest hurdles to climb came six years ago, when he had to convince parents to entrust their children from ultra-diverse Queens to this former Honduran footballer and bricklayer with no money and no one to vouch for him. "He was talking to me about starting his own business in the construction industry," said his wife... Читать дальше...

Resurgent Pogacar set for Tour de France duel with road-rusty Vingegaard

France24.com (en)

Team UAE's rider Pogacar goes into the 21-day race in red-hot form after winning the Giro d'Italia in May. Visma's Vingegaard, the two-time defending champion from Denmark, hasn't raced since suffering multiple fractures in a fall in March. Vingegaard's fall offers Slovenia's Pogacar a chance at revenge for the brutal manner in which the Dane crushed him on two Alpine stages late in the 2023 edition. "I've tested my legs a little and to be honest, I've never felt so good on a bike," said Pogacar, a back-to-back winner in 2020 and 2021. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

The 19-year-old from Texas completed a tumbling pass and fell to the mat at Target Center and was promptly attended by medical staff before being carried off the podium and departing the arena in a wheelchair with an apparent leg injury. There was no immediate update on her status for the trials, with women's competition scheduled for Friday and Sunday and the five-woman team for Paris to be named on Sunday night. Blakely arrived in Minneapolis off a runner-up finish to Simone Biles earlier this month at the US championships in Fort Worth... Читать дальше...

US health workers sound alarm on Gaza medical crisis

France24.com (en)

And health workers are facing agonizing decisions, like giving up on a seven-year-old boy with extensive burns because bandages are in short supply and he'd have probably died anyway. These are just some of the horrors witnessed by American doctors and nurses returning from the besieged Palestinian territory, who are now on a mission to spread the word about what they saw and apply pressure on Israel to allow in more life-saving supplies. "Whether or not a ceasefire happens, we have to get humanitarian aid. Читать дальше...

Why Finns are deadly serious about hobby horsing

France24.com (en)

Welcome to the strangely exacting world of hobby horsing, the Finnish sport guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Immaculately-coiffed equestrians leap athletically over fences just like in horse jumping, going as fast as they can against the clock straddling their stick steeds. Things are more stately in the dressage, with riders trotting their stick horses with intricately decorated stuffed heads before the discerning eyes of the judges. Some 260 riders from 22 countries -- most women and... Читать дальше...

Injured Jamaican sprint star Thompson-Herah out of Olympics: statement

France24.com (en)

Thompson-Herah, who completed the 100m-200m gold medal double at both the 2016 and pandemic-delayed 2020 Olympics, confirmed her decision after pulling out of this week's Jamaican trials. "I am hurt and devastated to be missing the Olympics this year but at the end of the day it's sports and my health comes first," Thompson-Herah, 31, wrote in a statement shared on social media. Thompson-Herah had already abandoned her bid to defend her 200m crown in Paris after opting not to take part in the 200m at this week's Jamaica trials in Kingston. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant met top officials over three days in Washington as he voiced hope for quietly working through disagreements with Israel's vital ally, drawing an implicit contrast to Netanyahu's more confrontational approach. "During the meetings we made significant progress, obstacles were removed and bottlenecks were addressed," Gallant said after meeting with Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security advisor. Gallant said the progress was on "a variety of issues" including "the topic... Читать дальше...

French court upholds warrant for Assad over chemical weapons

France24.com (en)

A French judiciary court rejected an appeal for its international arrest warrant against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to be annulled on the grounds that al-Assad had absolute immunity as head of state. The warrant for complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity was issued in November, 2023 stems from allegations that al-Assad's regime was responsible for using chemical weapons in an attack that killed over 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, in August, 2021.

France24.com (en)

Montella's side earned a tense victory over the 10-man Czechs to reach the knockout phase of a major tournament for the first time since a run to the Euro 2008 semi-finals. Turkey, who have been roared on by vociferous support in Germany, had struggled in a 3-0 loss to Portugal last time out to put their hopes of qualifying from Group F in peril. "We are always focused and hard-working, we deserve this qualification," said Italian Montella. "We have suffered some criticism that was not deserved, and we overcame that. Читать дальше...
