Saquon Barkley said that he didn't understand why fans booed Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl
Given that the Super Bowl is the most expensive ticket in American sports, it’s customary to see plenty of celebrities in attendance. But it is rare for those celebrities to garner a hostile reception from the crowd.
That was Taylor Swift’s experience on Sunday, and even Eagles running back Saquon Barkley didn’t understand the vitriol directed at the 14-time Grammy winner.
During the first quarter of the Eagles’ Super Bowl win over the Chiefs, Swift was booed loudly when she was shown on the Superdome videoboard. Swift shrugged off the boos, as she was in attendance to root on boyfriend Travis Kelce.
And that’s exactly why Barkley said that Swift didn’t deserve that kind of reception. Speaking to Howard Stern, the Eagles running back commended Swift for helping grow the game and added that she didn’t do anything to deserve the boos. Via USA TODAY:
“I don’t get it. I don’t get why she was getting hate there.”
He continued:
“She’s there supporting her significant other and she’s made the game bigger. In football, we’re all about how can we expand the game and make it more internationally and we’re traveling to Brazil and we’re traveling to Mexico, and apparently we’re traveling to Australia soon, so we’re trying to expand the game. Her being a part of it’s only helping that, so I don’t get the slack that she’s getting.”
The heavy-Eagles crowd likely booed Swift because she was rooting for the Chiefs as a Pennsylvania native. But then again, Chiefs fans like Paul Rudd and Jon Hamm didn’t receive boos like Swift.
Barkley was spot on there.
