EL CAJON, Calif. – Saturday's GSAC basketball home double-header was kicked off in exciting fashion as the San Diego Christian College Hawks women took down the visiting Life Pacific University Warriors 61-53. The victory gave the Hawks their first conference victory of the season and head coach Anessa Wolfblack the first of her career.
The first quarter opened as would be expected by these two evenly-matched teams. LPU put up the first points of the game, but SDCC's Jamee Joseph answered right back. Going blow for blow over the remaining minutes of the period, the teams would find themselves knotted at 8 with neither side making a claim to pull away.
Life Pacific would make back-to-back jumpers to open the second. Haylie Anderson would drain a three to get SDCC back to within one, but the Warriors would match immediately. After a made free-throw, LPU would find themselves up by 5 points, but the Hawks would come charging back. A series of buckets by Brianna Humphries and Elaina Martinez would flip the lead in San Diego Christian's favor. As Humphries pulled down defensive rebound after defensive rebound, Martinez would continue making the most of each Hawk offensive opportunity. The final four minutes of the half would yield a 12-6 San Diego Christian run fueled by three pointers by Sterling Edwards and Martinez, giving the home side a six-point advantage.
LPU would emerge from the locker room on a roll and the Hawks would find themselves trailing the Warriors by 3 points with a minute and a half left in the third. Cynnadie Whatley would begin the SDCC charge by sinking two free throws and Humphries would pull the Hawks even at 40 with a free throw of her own. Yet another Humphries defensive rebound would be converted to points when Keren Hogue converted with a layup to put the Hawks out in front by two at the break.
From there, Humphries would flat-out dominate down the stretch for San Diego Christian. The freshman forward who only began playing her collegiate basketball career three weeks ago, would pull in 7 of her 18 boards and score 12 of her 18 points in the final period for her second double-double in only her third game to ensure the Hawk victory.
