Rohit Sharma will be leading the Indian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies. The team is expected to be announced by May 1.
Lucknow: Former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma celebrated his 37th birthday by cutting a cake at midnight with his wife and teammates ahead of their important clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday. In a picture that is circulating on social media, Rohit, clad in his shorts and with a big smile on his face, was seen cutting the cake. For the unknown, Rohit is the first captain in the history of Indian Premier League to win five IPL titles with Mumbai Indians. However, Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the Mumbai Indians skipper ahead of the IPL 2024.
Meanwhile, Rohit will be leading the Indian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. He met the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Delhi on Sunday and the final 15-member squad will be announced before May 1. Known as ‘Hitman’ by his fans across the world, Rohit originally hails from Nagpur but played his domestic cricket for Mumbai. In a career spanning over 15 years, Rohit has won the 2007 T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. In fact, he became the first player to hit five centuries in an ODI World Cup – in 2019.
The most treasured feather on his cap came in 2021 when he was made the all-format Indian captain. Under his leadership, India reached the semifinals of 2022 T20 World Cup when they lost to eventual champions England. He had also led India to the finals of World Test Championship and ODI World Cup in 2023, but lost on both occasions.
At 37, cricketers tend to think about retirement but Rohit plans to continue to serve Indian cricket for few more years. “I haven’t really thought about retirement. But, I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully India makes it,” the Indian skipper said on ‘Breakfast With Champions’ show.
