In an essay for The Wall Street Journal, Heather explained that her father was not supportive of her career ambitions.
“My father, James, was an F.B.I. agent,” she recalled, via E News. “He regularly told me that the entertainment industry was evil and that Hollywood would claim my soul if I became an actress and appeared in anything with sexual content.”
She said her mom “supported my creative streak and acting ambition,” adding, “It was a mixed message, though, since my father was strongly against them and my mother didn’t do much to protect me from him.”
After the release of License to Drive, she realized that it was time to move out to pursue her career in earnest. A few years later, her relationship with her parents ended.
“I stopped talking to my parents when I was 25, and I’m estranged from them now,” she said. “My friends are proud of me, and I’m proud of myself.”
