Will Smith Not Starring in 'The Matrix 5' Despite Cryptic Instagram Video
Will Smith is not gearing up to star in the upcoming fifth The Matrix movie.
The Oscar-winning actor is the one causing the rumors after he posted a cryptic video on Instagram that discussed his decision to pass on the role of Neo in the first Matrix movie.
Keanu Reeves went on to star in the film while Will decided to make the box office flop Wild Wild West.

“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down. He chose Wild Wild West, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?” the video reads.
The video ends with the text, “Wake up, Will. The matrix has you.”
Variety reports that The Matrix 5 has already been greenlit, but Will “isn’t involved in the film franchise,” at least at this point.
The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard is attached to write and direct the upcoming movie.
