'The Flash' Director Acknowledges Ezra Miller's 'PR Crisis' While Explaining Why the Film Flopped

Director Andy Muschietti is opening up about the film failing at the box office and he’s acknowledging lead actor Ezra Miller‘s “PR crisis” during the promo campaign.

The film was released back in 2023 and earned $271 million at the worldwide box office, a much lower total than most DC Studios films.

Back in 2022, Ezra was arrested in Hawaii after an incident at a karaoke bar. They were also accused of harassing a woman in Germany, allegedly hosted three young children and their mom in Vermont in an “unsafe environment,” and were charged with felony burglary in the state. They were also accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a young person they met at age 12. The harassment order against Ezra was lifted in June 2023.

Andy discussed the box office failure in a new interview on Radio Tu’s YouTube show La Baulera del Coso.

“When a $200 million movie is made, the studio wants to bring even your grandmother to the cinema,” he said (via EW). “Then I found out things like that a lot of people who are not interested in the Flash character…there are many women who are not interested in the Flash as a character…but I am very happy with the movie.”

Andy then addressed Ezra‘s controversy.

“As many people know, we had a publicity crisis with the the main actor, who is Ezra Miller, who got into trouble due to a mental health situation,” he said. “When you make a movie, there are really things that you can’t control, and one of them is when actors have a PR crisis… I had, in general, a very good experience with them. They are a great actor and a great comedian.”

Ezra attended the movie premiere back in June 2023, marking their first public appearance in years.
