Fernanda Torres Reacts to Being Social Media Sensation, Gaining Notoriety Outside of Brazil

Fernanda Torres offers up a smile while arriving at the El Capitan Theatre on Thursday (January 16) in Hollywood.

The 59-year-old actress was seen making entrance ahead of filming an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, set to air later that night.

Recently, Fernanda opened up about gaining more fame outside of her home country Brazil with her new movie I’m Still Here, and how she feels about being a social media sensation.

“I’ve been around for decades,” she told Variety. “In Brazil, they know me well. Here, people are finally catching up. Better late than never, right?”

Of her online presence, Fernanda noted she didn’t want to have one years ago, but was told it was best for her career to have one.

“Brazil is a power machine on the internet,” she explains. “We’re heavy, heavy users. Ten years ago, I didn’t want to be online. I didn’t want to sell my private life. But my agent said it was important for my theater work, so we built my internet presence around that. Now, after the Golden Globe, it’s skyrocketed. It’s surreal.”

The Golden Globe in question is when she won the award earlier this month for Best Performance by a Female Actor for her work in I’m Still Here. It was the first time a Brazilian won the award, and only the second nomination. The other? Her mother, Fernanda Montenegro in 1999 for Central Station!
