TikTok Confirms App Will 'Go Dark' on January 19 Unless Biden Administration Assures Non-Enforcement of Ban
TikTok has confirmed that it will “go dark” on January 19 unless the Biden administration steps in at the last minute to assure non-enforcement of the ban.
A law was passed last year requiring that TikTok’s parent company ByteDance sell the app to a non-Chinese company by January 19, 2025, or it would face a nationwide ban.
While sources within the Biden administration have said that the ban won’t be enforced and they’ll let Trump‘s administration decide what to do, TikTok won’t be taking any chances.

A representative for the app said on Friday, “The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability to over 170 million Americans. Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19.”
The law will impose fines on companies that distribute or host the TikTok app, but will not impose fines on people who use the app. The fine is $5,000 per user.
The Supreme Court decided on Friday to uphold the planned ban.
