Musician Marianne Faithfull Dies at 78, Spokesperson Issues Statement

Marianne Faithfull, the legendary singer responsible for songs such as the ’60s standard “As Tears Go By,” has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

A spokesperson for the singer and actress confirmed the news in a statement.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” her spokesperson told BBC. “Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

A cause of death was not revealed.

Aside from her successful career, Marianne famously dated Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the ’60s.

Marianne was one of the first celebrities to publicly reveal that she was diagnosed with COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic in 2020. The following year, she said that she was struggling with side effects of long COVID, adding that there were concerns she’d never be able to sing again.

“I may not be able to sing ever again,” she said at the time. “Maybe that’s over. I would be incredibly upset if that was the case, but, on the other hand, I am 74. I don’t feel cursed and I don’t feel invincible. I just feel f–king human.”

She continued, saying, “But what I do believe in, which gives me hope, I do believe in miracles. You know, the doctor, this really nice National Health doctor, she came to see me and she told me that she didn’t think my lungs would ever recover. And where I finally ended up is: OK, maybe they won’t, but maybe, by a miracle, they will. I don’t know why I believe in miracles. I just do. Maybe I have to, the journey I’ve been on, the things that I’ve put myself through, that I’ve got through so far and I’m OK.”
