Lauren Daigle Talks Singing at Super Bowl in NOLA Following 2020 Controversy With Mayor
Lauren Daigle opened up about singing “America the Beautiful” at the 2025 Super Bowl following controversy with the New Orleans Mayor back in 2020.
The 33-year-old “You Say” singer is lending her voice to a version of the song, which she’ll perform with Trombone Shorty inside New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome on Sunday (February 9).
In an interview ahead of the big event, Lauren reflected on getting the chance to sing in NOLA. This comes several years after the city’s mayor LaToya Cantrell publicly called her out for a performance. She confirmed that the opportunity was a moment of vindication.

While on the Arroyo Grande podcast, Lauren joked about the situation with the Mayor, which took place after she performed at a rally amid the pandemic in November 2020. At the time, there were restrictions on gatherings for religious services, which the event protested.
Afterwards, Mayor Cantrell wrote a letter to the production team of Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve, urging them not to feature Lauren in their broadcast, via Page Six.
“I think from that letter, too, she quoted, ‘She’s a weapon to society,’” she said. “And I went home to Lafayette, and I got in my parents’ bed and I pulled the covers over my head as an adult. I was like, ‘Oh gosh, here we are again.’ Because now there’s no amount of public ridicule that is fun.”
She continued, saying, “What I learned is that when people need an element of hope, coming together is one of the most beautiful things. It is one of the most incredible rights that we have in this country. It is. And I think to take that away from people is so disheartening, especially in a time like that.”
“To get this moment years later… I would say for anybody watching that has had their reputation smeared in any sort of way and they are just waiting for the moment of vindication, sometimes it only takes five years,” Lauren joked.
