Idina Menzel Makes Long-Awaited Return to Broadway in 'Redwood,' an Original Musical She Helped Conceive!
Idina Menzel is back on Broadway and she is receiving some glowing reviews for her work in the new musical Redwood.
The Tony-winning actress hit the red carpet for the opening night performance on Thursday evening (February 13) at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City.
Idina was joined on the carpet by co-stars Michael Park, Khaila Wilcoxon, Zachary Noah Piser, and De’Adre Aziza. Also in attendance were standby performers Bradley Dean, Veronica Otim, Daniel Brackett, and Jessica Phillips.
Redwood is a transportive new musical about one woman’s journey into the precious and precarious world of the redwoods. Jesse (Menzel) seems to have it all — a successful career and devoted family — until a life-altering event drives her far from everyone and everything she knows. When she finds herself at the foot of the redwoods in Northern California, a chance encounter and a leap of faith will change her life forever. Redwood explores the lengths — and heights — one travels to find strength, resilience and healing.
The musical was written and directed by Tina Landau, with music by Kate Diaz. Idina helped conceive the show with Tina.
The New York Times says that Idina is a “force of nature” in the show, “who sings in 13 of the show’s 17 songs, of which seven are essentially solos. Has anyone ever belted so much, so tirelessly and hair-raisingly?”
Variety notes that Idina is giving a “stunning performance” in Redwood.
