'Shifting Gears' Exec Reveals Season 2 Plans, Kat Dennings Shares Thoughts Too
The first season of Shifting Gears, a new ABC comedy series, came to an end this week and we have some details to share about a potential second season.
ABC has not yet renewed Shifting Gears for season two, but it seems likely to happen and the show’s executive producer Michelle Nader is already coming up with ideas for the storyline.
The show follows a widower Matt (Tim Allen) who runs an auto shop, who reluctantly takes in his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her two children.

At the end of the first season, Matt shared a kiss with Eve, played by guest star Jenna Elfman. She’s confirmed to return if the show is renewed!
“Yes to more Eve! We are so lucky to have Jenna in the show. And Eve and Matt are such unlikely animal friends. Their chemistry is very spicy so I am personally dying to see where this goes,” Nader told TVLine.
Eve was the one who made a move on Matt and kissed him, which was a surprise to him. So, will he be ready to pursue a relationship in season two?
“Matt was very in love with his wife and was in a relationship for his whole life. Dating another woman is going to be a hard for a guy like him. But yeah, he definitely is intrigued by Eve. How could he not be,” Nader said.
Riley hasn’t yet kissed Gabe (Seann William Scott), so will that happen in season two?
“We are rooting for Riley and Gabe but timing is going to be the issue for them. I’ll leave it at that for now!” Nader said.
It has also been confirmed that Lucas Neff‘s Jimmy will return for season two and Riley’s brother Sam will be introduced. “We hope to introduce Sam in Season 2. We think he will be another fun casting opportunity and a great character for everyone to complain to!” Nader said.
So, what does Kat have to say about the next season?
“If you have kids or were in a long relationship and it ends, you realize that you used to be a certain thing and now you feel distanced from that. So who are you now?” she told TheWrap. “I’d be so excited to see her branch out with hobbies, trying to make friends… not just another boyfriend coming in.”
