Sarah Silverman Says Conan O'Brien Was 'The Best Thing' After She Was Fired From 'SNL'
Sarah Silverman is expressing gratitude for Conan O’Brien.
If you didn’t know, the 54-year-old comedian was a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live in 1993, but got fired by Lorne Michaels after one season due to lack of experience.
“I was totally thrown for a loop when I was fired, because it never occurred to me that was possible. I got a call from my agents and managers, like you know when they call you together it’s either great news or terrible news. I was so new to the industry, and they were like ‘Yeah, you’re fired,’ and I was in such denial about it — I couldn’t believe it,” she recalled while on “The Howard Stern Show.”
However, Sarah credited Conan for saving her career afterwards by frequently bringing her on his talk show, Late Night With Conan O’Brien.

“Conan was the best thing for me. His first year [on Late Night] was my first and only year at SNL. And he put me on all the time, even after I was fired, and that was the start for me. I wouldn’t have been able to be on Conan without SNL. And it was an incredible kind of boot camp experience,” she said.
Sarah also gave details about how the high pressure environment at SNL took a toll on her mental health.
“[SNL] is so magical, it’s so amazing, but there is just something about it where they just have this energy that puts you in your place where you feel like a piece of shit and terrified [with] the anxiety. It’s very hard to be zen and chill there,” she said.
