Speaking to Paris Match, Bernard revealed that Brigitte had been undergoing treatment for cancer and had two surgeries before her death. He added that she also suffered from “uncomfortable back pain,” according to a translation of the article.
“It slipped out a couple of times in recent months, during moments of physical suffering; she would say, ‘I’ve had enough, I want to go…’ ” he recalled of her will to live.
Bernard provided comfort to his partner in her final days, saying, “I never left her side. I watched over her, supported by nurses who came discreetly every day.”
He was there for her final moments, too.
“I was sleeping lightly next to her. I sat up when I heard her say ‘Pioupiou,’ that little nickname we used for each other in private, and then it was over,” he told the outlet. “A sense of peace, a tranquility settled on her face. And she became incredibly beautiful again, like in her youth. You wouldn’t have believed she was 91 years old.”
A star sparked some controversy after paying tribute to Brigitte.
