'56 Days' Reviews Are Mixed for Dove Cameron & Avan Jogia Prime Video Thriller

0

56 Days is here, and so are the first impressions.

Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia‘s new series is available to binge watch on Prime Video now, and all 8 episodes just dropped.

The show is based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s novel of the same name, but unlike the book, it’s not tied to COVID and doesn’t take place during a lockdown.

56 Days follows Oliver (Jogia) and Ciara (Cameron), who, after meeting randomly in a supermarket, fall for each other fast, and dangerously hard. Fifty-six days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body—brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed. Did he kill her? Did she kill him? Intercutting between an intense single day in the present investigation, and the twisted trajectory of the young lovers’ affair in the past, the series is both a unique crime story and a riveting, sexy, psychological thriller.

But what are critics saying about the show so far?

56 Days currently has a 63% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Variety says: “While some of the twists are more obvious than others, the show thrives because the audience never quite knows what to expect.”

The Daily Telegraph gave it 1 out of 5, writing: “If you stick it out until the end of the eight episodes…you will find that it does have quite a satisfying ending when it comes to identifying the body in the bath. But by then, like the corpse, your brain will have turned to slop.”

RogerEbert.com gave it 1 out of 4 stars, writing: “With the exception of a couple of actors, the writing and direction are so dreadful that most of the cast cannot bring the story to life, so each of the eight 48-minute episodes feels like it lasts for hours.”

CBR gave it a 6 out of 10, writing: “This adaptation of Catherine Ryan Howard’s global bestseller plays it way too safe, turning the story into a middle of the road ensemble piece with brief flashes of brilliance at best.”

Collider gives it a 7 out of 10, writing: “Despite some mishaps in the first episodes, 56 Days knows exactly where it’s going and how much it wants to break viewers’ hearts while getting there.”

TV Guide gives it a 7.7 out of 10, saying: “56 Days has enough personality to stand out from the crowd and soon makes its mark as a whodunit, circling a pair of suspects whose motives and life choices are intriguingly enigmatic.”

Screen Rant gives it a 6 out of 10, writing: “As an entertaining thriller that sticks the landing and has enough twists and strong performances to keep things entertaining, 56 Days is worth binge-watching, despite some of its shortcomings.”

The stars both just got support from their partners at the show’s premiere!
