Oklahoma City Fire Department Offers Free Smoke Alarm Installation
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — The Oklahoma City Fire Department offered to install new and free smoke alarms to people who live in Northwest Oklahoma City.
Akiel Wofford lives near Northwest and Penn, the same area where a house fire took the life of one man back in December.
"I do see a lot of fires in the area almost every week, maybe every two weeks," said Wofford.
Now the OKCFD is working to make sure that doesn't happen again.
District Chief of Community Risk Reduction Donnie Bennett, said the Fire Department knocked on the doors of nearly 300 homes in Northwest OKC.
"We're out just making sure that the residents in this neighborhood have smoke alarms," said Bennett.
Chief Bennett said although they were installing smoke alarms, it's important people stay aware of other fire hazards.
"During the cold season we ramp up our education when it comes to space heaters and things of that nature. Also chimneys just making sure that those things are maintained," said Bennett.
People like Wofford took them up on the offer, he said he got four new alarms installed inside his home.
"The main importance for me is my daughter like she's running around, I want to always know that she is protected," said Wofford.
It's an effort, the fire department said hopefully save lives.
"They allow people if there is a fire inside of the home, it gives them time to get out," added Bennett.
