OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – More than a hundred protestors braved Monday's heat for Oklahoma City's 2024 Women's March.
The march came on the anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade in 2022. The June 24, 2022, ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has seen a trickle down of legislative action across the country, including protests.
In May of the same year, Governor Kevin Stitt signed one of the nation's most conservative abortion bills, banning abortion at conception and allowing private citizens to sue providers who performed them.
Governor Stitt reacting to the anniversary in a statement posted to social media below Monday:
Dozens of people in attendance at Monday's protest brought and made signs in support of their fight for reproductive rights. The march also included chants and speakers weighing in on how important they believe reproductive rights are to women.
"[Abortions] are always going to happen," said co-organizer Lia Camp. "They're always going to be necessary so we want to fight for our rights."
Protestors in attendance also included the next generation of Oklahoma voters, including 16-year-old Moira Hern, who spoke with News 4 employees.
"I think it should matter to everybody," said Hern. "People should have the decision about their bodies if they can choose to put holes in their face or piercings and tattoo their bodies."
Hern also criticized elected leaders for not showing up to the protest, adding that she would remember when she was of legal age to cast a vote.
"Not actually like being here for the people that you serve is just, it's pathetic and foolish," said Hern.
