Suspect in custody after being shot by OKC Police

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Just over an hour after ringing in the New Year, gunfire rang out in Southwest Oklahoma City. 

“We didn't know how to react,” said Gerardo Macias, who spent the night nearby. “It was like a surprise for me. Because I think that the surrounding [area is] a quiet space."

According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, around 1:30 Wednesday morning, officers were called to a domestic incident near Southwest 29th Street and Kentucky Avenue. 

"When officers were en route, they were advised a male subject outside the home was possibly shooting a gun,” said Capt. Valerie Littlejohn with OKCPD. 

Capt. Littlejohn said when officers got to the area the suspect ran off. 

"The officers chased after him. They caught up to him near a backyard a couple houses down,” said Littlejohn. “During that confrontation at some point in time, one officer did discharge his firearm toward the suspect and the suspect was hit by that gunfire." 

His injuries are not life threatening. No one else was hurt. 

Police said a gun was found near the suspect. 

"I didn't expect that,” said Macias. “Not good for anyone.” 

The officer who shot the suspect is on routine administrative leave.
