Firefighters affected by cold temperatures while fighting SW OKC house fire

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Monday’s weather conditions caused minor complications for crews as they battled a house fire in Southwest Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City fire crews rushed to a burning home near SW 15 Street and Morgan Road around 7 a.m.

"Obviously it's windy and cold this morning,” said OKCFD District Chief DJ Harris. “When we got on scene there was heavy visible fire and smoke and it was being pushed by the wind."

Fortunately, the flames did not spread to any nearby homes and all the residents inside the house safely escaped.

However, Harris said the water crews used to knock down the flames quickly turned into ice.

"Ice developing on the streets and the driveway. We did have some firefighters that were slipping around and sliding,” said Harris. “We just tried to take it easy and we carried ice melt on our rigs and we were able to help that situation."

What sparked the fire is still under investigation.

Crews also said it's still too early to know how much the damage will cost.
