Oklahomans protest against President Trump's policies
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Hundreds of people showed up on the Oklahoma State Capitol steps on Wednesday. It was part of a protest taking place across the country against President Donald Trump's policies.
The movement is called 50501, which stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one day. The group said they want unity and justice across the United States.
50501 partners with a group called The Political Revolution who wants President Trump to step down or be impeached.
They're also hoping for mass investigations of Trump appointees.
Protestors who stood outside the capitol on Wednesday want change to happen.
"We need to hold our government on the federal and state level accountable because the actions that they are taking are unconstitutional and illegal," said Rebekah Calandro, a protestor.
"I'm out here today because I stand strong for public education. We do not need ICE in our schools terrifying children," said Shauna Evans, a protestor.
Hundreds of people held signs and chanted in front of the capitol doors.
"We're not going to be quiet, we're going to be loud and proud and we're going to make change," said Heather Schenk, a protestor.
Others showed up in support of Trump's agenda.
"It is and has been a federal crime to assist in any way an illegal alien terrorist to enter into the United States and territories and their entry into any country on Earth," said Amber Rae Lambkin, opposed to the protest.
The executive director for the Republican Party in Oklahoma said he supports the freedom to protest, but doesn't support what they stand for.
"It's obviously a stark difference from the previous administration. So I believe that there are some growing pains of people getting used to the fact that things are going in a completely different direction than they have in the last four years," said Stan Stevens, the Executive Director of OKGOP.
The Political Revolution sent News 4 a statement on the protest and the movement.
