2nd victim dies after shooting at Ohio cosmetics facility; suspect due in court Thursday
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A second person has died after a gunman opened fire in a cosmetics facility in New Albany, Ohio, late on Tuesday night.
The Franklin County coroner said Shakhar Chapagai, 30, was pronounced dead at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday at a Columbus hospital. The identity of the first victim, who was found dead at the KCD/One facility when law enforcement arrived on the scene, has yet to be released.
The accused shooter, Bruce Reginald Foster III, is due in court Thursday afternoon.
The shooting took place at the KDC/One building in New Albany at around 10:20 p.m., authorities said. KDC/One’s website indicates that the company produces cosmetics, toiletries, cleaning products and insecticides.
In addition to the two deceased victims, four others were injured in the shooting. The condition of the other victims remains unknown.
Foster, 28, was an employee at the facility, the New Albany police previously confirmed. The suspect had been working for several hours before opening fire and then left in a rideshare vehicle, authorities said.
The suspect's motive remains unknown. Police said there was no unusual behavior or altercation before the shooting. About 150 people were inside the warehouse at the time, with some not knowing about the shooting until police arrived because of the size of the facility.
“This has been a very tragic situation,” New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones hours after the shooting. “This is something that we hope that would never happen in our community. But we prepare for it, and this is where we are now.”
Foster was apprehended and arrested about 12 hours after the shooting, just south of the Ohio State campus in Columbus' Weinland Park neighborhood.
He has been charged with one count of aggravated murder. He is scheduled to appear in Licking County Common Pleas Court at 1 p.m. Thursday.
