Oklahoma City Police says Tuesday night shooting was a "gun battle," leaving two dead
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma City Police are investigating a double homicide that happened at a local elementary school Tuesday night.
"A dispute occurred, a gun battle ultimately ensued following that dispute," said Sgt. Dillon Quirk with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Officers responded to a local hospital after several people came in with gunshot wounds. Police said 18-year-old Oscar Herrera died at the hospital. Then, a few hours later, a 17-year-old boy died.
Authorities say a group gathered on the lot of Coolidge Elementary near South Villa. The number of people in the group is unknown.
"It's unclear how these persons knew each other but they met up there in that parking lot," Sgt. Quirk said.
Hilberto Rios lives across the street from the school. He told News 4, "I heard a gunshot, maybe five or eight."
He described hearing the bullets fly while sitting in his living room.
"Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Me, I turned off the TV, I grabbed my family and I said go to the room, it's scary," said Rios.
Rios says he saw some of the group drive away from the scene after the gunfight.
"I checked out the window, and the people over there in the car went zoom," said Rios.
Sgt. Quirk said shell casings were found on the scene and more than one person fired shots.
The suspect is a young man, age 17, who was booked into a juvenile detention center. We won't be identifying him, due to his age, and because he hasn't officially been charged.
"He's been booked on a complaint of murder in the second degree," said Sgt. Quirk.
Police said there is no threat to the public or the school. Why the group decided to meet at Coolidge Elementary, is unknown.
