Protesters take on President Trump's policies
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Hundreds of Oklahomans showed up at the state capitol on Monday to voice their concerns about President Trump and the administration. The Oklahoma chapter of the 50501 movement called it the "Not My Presidents' Day" protest.
The protest, put on by 50501, is the same group that hosted a nationwide protest a few weeks ago.
They're calling for the impeachment of President Trump, more oversight over billionaire Elon Musk and his handling of the Department of Government Efficiency, and the reinstatement of DEI policies.
"I'm all for trimming budgets and cutting back where we can, but Elon Musk has absolutely no experience in government. And there's no way that in three weeks they could have made all these studies," said Carl Loeffelholz, a protestor.
Protestors shared a wide range of concerns from high egg prices to their personal privacy.
"He spoke about lowering prices. I just went and bought a carton and eggs for $8. Prices aren't coming down. I don't like Elon Musk being in there looking at my private information or anyone else's, for that matter," said Jeff Sheckeos, a protestor.
There's a Republican supermajority inside the capitol. News 4 talked to one state lawmaker about the concerns and the calls for impeachment.
"The people of America voted overwhelmingly, voted for Donald Trump. And the people of Oklahoma did an even better job. And they voted in every county for Donald Trump. And so to start this, you know, protest saying that they want to impeach Donald trump is just to show that division," said JJ Humphrey, Representative R-Lane.
At the rally, protesters said Oklahomans need to take action.
"You can write your legislators, you can make phone calls, you can do all sorts of things to try to help if you disagree. But you cannot sit by and do nothing," said Sharon Herje, a protestor.
While Humphrey can appreciate their right to protest, he doesn't agree with the name of this demonstration as "Not My Presidents' Day."
"I didn't go out and do that with Joe Biden even though I was not happy with Joe Biden, still not happy with Joe Biden," Humphrey said.
Organizers of the 50501 movement said their mission is to uphold the Constitution and limit executive order overreach.
