Firefighters battling frigid conditions while battling fires, urging safety with heating
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) - Fortunately, a family escaped a house fire in Midwest City early Thursday morning. Firefighters said smoke was coming out of the roof when they arrived at the scene.
It was a very frigid scene for them to as they got to work putting out the flames.
"I was very concerned that any of that, with the wind that was blowing in my direction, would hop the fence and hit my house,” neighbor Dan Grimes said.
According to Grimes, just feet separate he and his neighbors homes. He woke up to the smell of smoke thinking it was coming from his own house.
"That causes your heart to beat a little faster and I just said 'dear God, don't let the house be on fire.,” he said. "I checked everything in my vents and I could smell the smoke more, but there wasn't anything burning in my house."
It was after 2 in the morning when he stepped outside and saw smoke billowing from his neighbors roof.
"The family was able to get out uninjured,” Tyler Nels with the Midwest City Fire Dept. said.
Fortunate news, as fire officials are urging everyone to check their alarms and be mindful of heating safety, especially with space heaters, as colder temperatures have led to an uptick in fire calls. Officials on scene said they didn’t have any estimates on the damage right now, but quick action ensured the safety of all involved.
"These Midwest City firefighters are gold medalists man,” Grimes said. “They're they best.”
No injuries were reported to firefighters and the cause of the fire is under investigation
