OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Monopoly has been a household staple for decades, and now, Oklahoma City is going to have its own version.
You’ve probably rolled the dice and bought all the properties numerous times in your life. It has probably even resulted in a family fight or two. Soon, you can pass go and collect $200, but with landmarks you know good and well from all across Oklahoma City.
Now, they need your help in deciding what areas of Oklahoma City you want to see on the game board.
"There's only one Monopoly and there has never been a true Monopoly for Oklahoma City until now and so that is exciting,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said at the game's announcement on Friday.
The city is joining around 40 others in the U.S. with its own version of the game. Now, “Rich Uncle Pennybags” needs your help making some decisions.
"Our residents will have the opportunity to share the things that they think ought to be included,” Holt said.
The landmarks from the official announcement Friday are not finalized. Instead, they were only examples of all the possibilities. Consider buying Bricktown as the “Boardwalk” or Route 66 as “Atlantic Avenue.”
"Whatever it is, whatever the inside jokes might be that you guys all know about, let's put it in the game on these community chess cards, on these chance cards,” said Katie Hubbard with Monopoly’s licensing company Top Trump’s.
If a business wants to be a part of the game board, it will come at a cost. KFOR was told that it starts in the thousands.
Areas of the city, like Scissortail Park, can get a spot for free.
The official board will be revealed in November. Act quickly though because submissions have to be in by April 1 and there’s no get out of jail free cards.
"To really be able to memorialize some of this activity in such a fun and creative way, I think it's truly an honor,” Visit OKC President Zac Craig said.
The game will be revealed during Monopoly’s 90th Anniversary.
