Will Rogers International Airport: Air travelers still showing up without REAL ID
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Will Rogers International Airport officials say some travelers are still showing up to catch flights without having a REAL ID or passport.
Oklahoma's deadline for REAL ID compliance was May 7. Enforcement started the same day for TSA agents at Will Rogers International Airport. From May 7 to May 11 the airport says it's seen a pretty overwhelming compliance with 98% of travelers showing up with the proper identification for screening. The 2% of travelers who have shown up without them still account for a little over 700 people.
"I think for the most part, from what TSA has told us, that everybody has been pretty reasonable," said Stacey Hamm, spokesperson for Will Rogers International Airport. "You know, they've walked up and said, hey, I don't have a REAL ID, so what do I do? So they're already self-identifying and letting the TSA agents know, which is very helpful as well."
Hamm says you may still be able to make your flight without a REAL ID or passport, but you'll likely face a delay as TSA agents try to prove you are who you say you are using alternative methods.
"TSA is actually taking you off to the side," said Hamm. "You will have to wait for a couple of minutes, maybe up to 30 minutes, depending on how busy we are."
Hamm said that it can be tedious heading into the busy travel season, especially over summer.
"TSA wants to make it a great experience for everyone and they want to make sure that you get through pretty quickly, and if you don't have the proper ID, that's going to not only hold you up, but it's going to hold up other people in the line as well," said Hamm.
Hamm said it's important to note, the temporary paper ID you get while you wait for your REAL ID to come in the mail won't cut it either for the TSA. She said you should plan your trips accordingly with the amount of time it takes to receive your ID, if you don't have a passport.
