'Almost met God': Repeated speeder tells Oklahoma Co. Sheriff's deputies he was late for church
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A spokesperson for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) says he's surprised by a driver caught on camera excessively speeding twice in less than a month's time.
On Friday, May 9, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office shared that a driver of a Tesla had been pulled over on I-40 and Pennsylvania Avenue for going 133 MPH in a 60 MPH zone. Body camera video shared by authorities shows the driver being asked directly why he was speeding.
"I was trying to get to church," the driver can be heard saying to a deputy.
The deputy appears to be taken aback by the response.
"Trying to get to church," the deputy can be heard saying. "Well, going 133, you almost met God because if a car pulled in front of you, you ain't gonna survive that."
OCSO says the driver was given a ticket and had his vehicle impounded regardless.
"When you're going that fast, you're going to have to pay some consequences," said Aaron Brilbeck, spokesperson for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office. "I'm sure God will understand if you're a few minutes late for church, if it saves a couple of lives."
Not even two weeks later, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office says the same driver was pulled over again on May 18 near I-35 and I-240. Deputies say the driver was going 80 MPH in a construction zone. Brilbeck says it just shows a blatant lack of concern or apathy for anyone else on the road.
"This guy is facing some serious fines," said Brilbeck. "It's not cheap getting your car out of impound, he's so apathetic towards that that he's willing to drive recklessly again. You can kill somebody else. You can kill yourself. It's just not worth the risk for me."
OCSO says it's also important to note that speeding in some cases can get you taken straight to jail, and also hurt your driving record, which can easily cost you your license.
