Shooting after NBA Finals unrelated to celebrations; Police say
OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok (KFOR) — Hundreds of people ran away from NBA Finals celebrations Sunday night after gunshots rang out across the street from the Paycom Center. News 4 had several crews on the scene and even had to take cover.
"I heard about five or six shots just ring out. And I knew they were close. I ducked behind the news car," said Steve Johnson, KFOR Assignment Desk Manager.
Oklahoma City Police said a fight broke out between two men. One of them pulled a gun and shot the other one.
Police also said the incident was not related to anything involving game celebrations.
News 4's Assignment Desk Manager, Steve Johnson, was there getting video of the celebrations after the win, when he saw everyone start running.
"I typically am here, coming across our police scanners, and I'm the one responsible for dispatching crews to go cover something like that. So, yeah, that was a bit jarring being there, being that close. First first time to witness it...don't think I wanna go through that again," said Johnson.
News 4's Abigail Franklin was also downtown when it happened and even called in for a live report during the 10 o'clock newscast.
"Shots were fired a little bit earlier and people were running away from that. The perimeter that they're cleared here is a little bigger. They moved us back," said Abigail Franklin, News 4 Reporter.
Police quickly responded to the scene as the area was flooded with law enforcement as a precaution for NBA Finals security.
"They had, you know, officers on top of rooftops. They had their drones. They had their helicopter. I saw sheriff's deputies on horseback. They had the SWAT teams out there," said Johnson.
Police said the person shot was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One person was detained, but no arrests have been made. This is a developing story.
