OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Governor Kevin Stitt and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro joined together on Thursday regarding the budget reconciliation bill that is moving through the United States Senate.
As reported by the Associated Press, House Republicans added a clause to the Republicans' signature inside of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," which would ban states and localities from regulating AI for 10 years.
This could ban state regulations on the usage of AI in business, research, public utilities, educational settings, and government.
Many states, according to a tracker by Public Citizen, have enacted legislation to regulate deepfakes used with artificial intelligence in political campaigns, with the legislation pending in 14 states, including Oklahoma.
The joint statement by both Governor Stitt and Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro can be read below:
As Governors, we are opposed to language that would prohibit states from regulating artificial intelligence for the next decade. As emerging technologies rapidly evolve, it is essential that states retain the flexibility to respond to their unique economic, social, and public safety needs. In Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, we both recognize the importance of maintaining this flexibility in order to continue creating real growth and opportunity – and to help manage the challenges of the future as states.
