Protesters gather outside Payne County Courthouse to raise concern over rape case
PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) - A Stillwater teenager was convicted of multiple violent sex crimes but was allowed to walk free with no jail time. Oklahomans are now protesting, demanding justice.
"We're out seeking justice for women and Girls in Pain County and all of Oklahoma," said Sheila Hayes, a protester.
Oklahomans say they are seeking justice after a teen who was 17 years old at the time he was convicted of violent sex crimes.
"I feel like there are a lot of people out here in the community that have been punished way worse for way less crime," said Samantha Morgan, a protester. "The fact that he got away with just a slap on the wrist is appalling."
According to court documents, the teen faced 11 charges that carried 78 years of jail time.
He pleaded no contest and was allowed to be treated as a "youthful offender, rather than an adult, because he was a minor.
Protestors at Wednesday morning's event called for the resignation of Judge Susan Worthington and the Payne County District Attorney's Office ADA's to resign.
The teen received a deal that resulted in no prison time, only daily check-ins, counseling, no social media, and 150 hours of community service, which ends when he turns 19.
"I don't understand how they're not supporting women, young girls, how they're not standing up for us," said Hayes.
Beyond the signs and chanting, some protestors signed up to volunteer to collect signatures in hopes to eventually get a petition off the ground.
"I want safe schools for my daughter. She deserves to be able to go to school, not among rapists," said Lacee Fusilier, a protestor.
Those who attended say their fight is not over yet and will continue to ask for justice.
News 4 has previously asked for a reaction from the District Attorney and the Judge. So fat, they are not commenting.
