Ebrahim Raisi, the President of Iran, is heading to Islamabad, Pakistan, led by Shahbaz Sharif, facing complex economic, political, and security challenges. Iran is also experiencing similar security and economic conditions as Pakistan.

Iranian state-affiliated media reported that Raisi’s official visit was received extensively by Pakistani authorities and political elites. They continue to report that 11th Street in Islamabad will be named “Iran” to mark this event.

Pakistan is Raisi’s first foreign destination in 2023, drawing significant attention from Iranian media. It’s also his first visit to Pakistan as President since the formation of the new government in the country, capturing the interest of Pakistani media.

Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Islamabad on Monday and was welcomed by Pakistan’s Minister of Housing upon arrival at Islamabad Airport. After meeting with Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, he stated during a press conference that the economic and trade relations between the two countries would see an initial $10 billion increase, echoed in Pakistani media.

Shehbaz Sharif also, in the customary welcome of the Iranian President, began his remarks in Persian during a meeting held yesterday in Islamabad and later continued in Urdu. In this meeting, representatives from Tehran and Islamabad signed eight memorandums of understanding in various fields, including economic and security sectors.

This comes as Pakistan is facing unprecedented security challenges and is on the brink of a complete economic collapse. So much so that Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, stated on April 1st of this year that the country’s economy is “almost bankrupt.”

Iran, too, finds itself in a similar position to Pakistan, both in terms of security, which has recently escalated, and economically, facing extensive sanctions from the United States and Western countries.
