Pakistani media have reported that due to increasing threats against foreign students in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, about 140 Pakistani students who were trapped in Bishkek have been transferred to Lahore.
The Pakistani newspaper Dawn, in a report published on Sunday, May 19, wrote that these students were transferred from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to Lahore on Saturday night.
According to this media outlet, repeated attacks on foreign students in Kyrgyzstan began when a video showing a clash between Kyrgyz students and foreign students went viral on social media, leading a group of people to gather in response to what they described as the beating of Kyrgyz students.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has also issued a statement urging its citizens in Kyrgyzstan to stay at home until the situation normalizes.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has expressed his concern over the violence and announced the possibility of sending a cabinet minister to Bishkek immediately.
Kyrgyz government officials have explained the situation by saying that the violence against foreign students stemmed from citizens’ protests over the increase in employed migrants in the country.
Media reports, citing Kamchybek Tashiev, the head of Kyrgyzstan’s National Security Committee, have stated that “this incident occurred last night following protests by the country’s citizens, mostly aged 18 to 25, against the increase in employed migrants.”
