Pakistani media have reported that Musadik Malik, Pakistan’s Minister of Petroleum, agreed with Raşit Meredow, the Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan, to continue pursuing the TAPI project with Afghanistan’s participation.
According to reports, the meeting focused on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.
The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement highlighting that Malik and Meredow discussed the importance of enhancing economic and energy cooperation, including the TAPI project.
Meredow arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday, July 24th, for a two-day visit.
The TAPI project was agreed upon by the leaders of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India in 2016, but it was halted due to security threats and developments in Afghanistan.
The TAPI pipeline is considered one of the largest gas transmission projects in the region and aims to transport 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.
Despite previous delays, Afghanistan has emphasized its commitment to continuing the TAPI project and has pledged to resolve any legal issues hindering its progress.
The renewed commitment from both Pakistani and Turkmen officials signifies a hopeful step toward advancing the TAPI project, as Afghanistan connects Central Asia’s rich energy resources to the demand of South Asian countries.
This project remains crucial for regional energy security and economic development, and the ongoing diplomatic efforts reflect the importance of international collaboration in achieving its successful implementation.
